The St. Andrew’s Youth Group is for kids in 7th-12th grades. Schools from all over Richland and Lexington counties are represented. Youth group kids frequently see each other outside of church events because they love each other so much. It’s a true family, but one that’s welcoming to new faces.
The youth are involved in all aspects of the church-serving as lay readers and communion assistants monthly, singing in the Ensemble, and holding down the back pew in the balcony during worship.
Generally, the youth group meets all together 3 times a month and separately (middle and high school) once a month. There’s usually some sort of outreach and service event, a fun fellowship event and many months there’s an overnight or weekend retreat.
In the summer, we attend WOW (an urban service ministry week at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Knoxville, TN), Home Works (a week-long home repair mission week in John’s Island, SC), Campfirmation at Lutheridge (for rising 8th graders), and we help to staff VBS. Every three years we attend the ELCA Youth Gathering along with 30,000 other Lutheran Youth from all over the United States. In July of 2015 we attended the Youth Gathering in Detroit and we plan to take a group to Austin, TX in 2018. Scattered throughout the summer are fellowship events to keep everyone close.
