A magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti on Tuesday, Jan. 12, devastating millions of people in a matter of minutes. News reports have evoked a flood of concern from people around the world, millions of whom were ready to respond immediately.

The ELCA, through the Lutheran World Federation, is already responding to the critical needs of survivors in Haiti. Staff there will focus their immediate efforts on issues of water safety and sanitation, assisting with medical triage, and providing emergency sheltering for the many who are now homeless.

In anticipation of generous gifts from the Lutheran community, ELCA Disaster Response has authorized $250,000 for immediate relief assistance in Haiti, with the possibility for an additional $500,000 as the full scope of this disaster continues to become clear. Your gifts are needed now to bring immediate relief and continued hope to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. One hundred percent of your donation to ELCA Disaster Response will be used for the relief efforts.

Pray
Please hold the people of Haiti in your prayers in the coming days, weeks and months, as well as those working tirelessly, day and night, to provide survivors with food, water, shelter and medical aid.

Spread the Word
There is one more thing you can do. Although many of us resist forwarding emails to friends, sending a link to this webpage — www.salutheran.com/haiti — may be one exception. Consider those you know who would like to be a part of this effort and give those friends that opportunity.

A fourth opportunity to make a difference…
The St. Andrew’s Connection

St. Andrew’s own Lee Breuer, who traveled to Haiti in May on a mission trip, asks that you prayerfully consider also supporting now, and on a continuing basis, the ministries of the Lazarus Project in Haiti.

The Lazarus Project www.lazarusprojecthaiti.org is supported by many churches and individuals in the U.S. from various Christian denominations and individuals with the support of the non-profit umbrella of Food for the Poor.

Checks may be made payable to "Village of Hope Inc." and sent in care of Advent Lutheran Church to 300 East Yamato Road, Boca Raton, FL 33431, or you can visit www.foodforthepoor.org to donate by credit card. The Lazarus Project Board will determine where best to use gifts in Haiti as relief and recovery opportunities and requirements become known. To learn more about this ministry, talk to Lee next time you see him!
